Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo predictions

By their high standards, Real Madrid are going through a sticky patch.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have won only one of their last four games in all competitions. This is by no means a crisis – three of those matches have been draws and they have not lost a match in 90 minutes since September – but nor are Madrid firing on all cylinders right now.

This dip in form is unlikely to affect their La Liga title prospects. Madrid have built up a seven-point lead over Girona at the summit of the standings. They also have the head-to-head advantage over their closest challengers.

But another couple of adverse results paired with a winning run for Girona could leave Madrid looking nervously over their shoulder. It is a situation Ancelotti will want to avoid, especially as he would prefer to focus on the business end of the Champions League.

Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier competition on Wednesday courtesy of a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig, which followed a 1-0 win for the Spanish side in the first leg.

The Blancos were a little fortunate to triumph in Germany last month. Leipzig created the better chances on the night but they were wasteful in front of goal. Madrid took full advantage and picked up the win thanks to a Brahim Diaz wonderstrike.

Ancelotti’s men made it a nervy night for Madrid’s fans on Wednesday. Vinicius Junior put them 1-0 up on the night and 2-0 ahead on aggregate in the 65th minute, but Leipzig pulled one back almost immediately and created chances thereafter, with Dani Olmo hitting the bar late on.

Not for the first time, Madrid found a way to win in Europe. Their supporters will still be looking for an improved performance this weekend, though, as relegation candidates Celta Vigo come to town.

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo betting tips

Real Madrid should return to winning ways when they take on Celta Vigo in the Spanish capital this weekend.

Real Madrid to win and both teams to score – 13/8 (BoyleSports)

In six of the last seven La Liga seasons, Celta Vigo have finished in the bottom half. In that time, they have finished 13th three times and 17th twice. Both positions are still possible in 2023/24.

Right now, though, 17th is the spot in the standings that Celta occupy. To take an optimistic view, they are five points above the relegation zone and five points adrift of Alaves in 13th. Both a mid-table finish and demotion are still possible.

Celta have been competitive for much of the campaign. They have not lost a league match by more than a one-goal margin since October, and have only done so twice all season.

An away game against Real Madrid is still a daunting task, however, and it is difficult to envisage Celta picking up anything this weekend.

Still, they have scored in five consecutive games and will note that Madrid have conceded in three of their last five in La Liga.

Draw/Real Madrid half-time/full-time – 3/1 (Betfair)

Not for the first time this season, Real Madrid started the draw with RB Leipzig on Wednesday slowly.

The home team did not manage a single shot on target in the first half. Leipzig could count themselves unlucky to not be ahead at the interval.

“It was a bad game, with low intensity,” Ancelotti admitted afterwards. “It was not a good night obviously. It is my fault.”

Rafael Benitez, the Celta Vigo manager, will have watched that encounter closely. He is arguably not the coach he once was, but Benitez has always excelled at setting up a team without the ball.

Celta will be compact out of possession and will not be easy to break down, especially in the first half.

In the end, though, Madrid will almost certainly have too much quality for Benitez’s Celta.

Considering only home games, the Blancos rank only fourth in the first-half table. But they tend to come alive after the break, winning 11 of 13 second halves at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Vinicius Junior to score any time – 11/10 (BoyleSports)

Jude Bellingham has been suspended for two games following his outburst at a referee last weekend.

No one has scored more goals for Real Madrid this season than the England international, so others will have to step up in his absence.

The good news for Ancelotti and co. is that Vinicius is in fine form, having scored three goals in his last two outings.

It will be intriguing to see how Madrid intend to fit the Brazilian into the same team as Kylian Mbappe next term.

Before the Frenchman arrives, Vinicius will be determined to show why he is just as much of an asset as Mbappe.
