Manchester United vs Everton predictions

After another defeat on derby day last time out, Manchester United are up against it in their bid to qualify for next season’s edition of the Champions League.

There may yet be five qualification berths available to Premier League teams, but at the time of writing there are only four guaranteed spots.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are the leading contenders for the remaining one behind Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. Those two teams will go head-to-head in a potentially fascinating fixture on Sunday.

The good news for United is that at least one of Villa or Tottenham is sure to drop points this weekend. In an ideal world for Erik ten Hag’s team, both would. At the same time, United must ensure they take care of their own business by defeating Everton.

After that 3-1 defeat by Manchester City last time out, United now find themselves a whole 11 points adrift of Villa in fourth. Tottenham have a six-point lead over the Red Devils but also have a game in hand.

In truth, it is hard to see United overtaking either team. The gap to Spurs is not exactly insurmountable, especially if it were to shrink to three points by the end of the weekend.

However, the truth is that United have not played well enough this term to suggest they are capable of going on the sort of winning run that would propel them into the Champions League places.

After all, United have already lost 11 league games in 2023/24 – the same number as bottom-half Bournemouth. The Cherries are one of only six sides with a worse attacking record than Ten Hag’s charges.

United have gone backwards since last season and their manager could be made to pay for that regression at the end of the season. A third loss in a row on Saturday would only make things worse.

Manchester United vs Everton betting tips

Manchester United are hit or miss but they should have enough to see off the challenge of Everton this weekend.

Manchester United to win – 5/6 (bet365)

Everton learnt last week that their points deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations has been reduced from 10 to six.

Just as well. The Toffees are not picking up many points on the pitch at the moment. A 3-1 loss to West Ham United last weekend means they have now gone nine games without a victory in the Premier League.

Everton are still right in the relegation mix. Their poor form means they are still only five points and two places clear of the bottom three.

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche’s side are still awaiting the outcome of another charge for a separate breach of the aforementioned financial rules.

Everton are performing well defensively but they simply do not score enough goals. That will be a problem against Manchester United, who won the reverse fixture 3-0 in November.

⚽ Back Manchester United to win at 5/6 with bet365

Draw at half-time – 13/10 (bet365)

Manchester United were 1-0 up at the interval at the Etihad last weekend, but their first-half performances at Old Trafford are often poor.

Remarkably, only Burnley have a worse home record in the opening 45 minutes of matches than Ten Hag’s side, who have been ahead at the interval on familiar turf just twice in 13 attempts.

United tend to be slow starters in front of their own fans and that is an issue Everton will look to exploit.

We saw Dyche’s side frustrate Manchester City in the opening 45 minutes last month, holding them to a goalless draw at the break.

United are not in City’s class, so Everton’s tactics could be even more successful at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils should ultimately have enough talent in their matchday squad to emerge triumphant, but the evidence of the campaign to date suggests they will probably not be ahead at the midway stage.

Marcus Rashford to score any time – 7/4 (bet365)

Rashford scored a stunning goal against Manchester City as the visitors to the Etihad drew first blood against the odds.

United held onto their lead until the second half but City ultimately proved too strong.

Nevertheless, the Old Trafford faithful will hope that Rashford’s strike in the derby will have given a boost to his confidence, even though his all-round performance was far from perfect.

Rashford has really struggled this term. In 2022/23, he reached 30 goals in all competitions for the first time in his career.

As we approach the business end of the current campaign, the England international is stuck on six goals. He has cut a frustrated figure for months now.

Rashford is still capable of being a productive Premier League attacker, though, and he should get chances against Everton.

After his superb strike last time out, no one would be surprised to see him take one.
