Manchester City vs Aston Villa predictions

Manchester City are no longer the favourites to win the Premier League title.

A 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the weekend, coupled with Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, has bumped City down to second in the betting charts, behind the Reds.

Many will disagree with that assessment. City have the easiest run-in of the three contenders, although games like Wednesday’s against Aston Villa will not be easy.

They also have more experience and knowhow within their squad than either Liverpool or Arsenal. The former have won one Premier League title since 1990, while the latter have not finished atop the table since 2004.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, only won one league championship as a player – and that was with Rangers in the very different environment of the Scottish Premier League.

At the same time, City do not look like the force they were last term, when Pep Guardiola’s side swept all before them in three competitions.

They were the more disappointed team after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal. As the home side, City were obliged to go on the front foot, not least because they lost the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium.

Yet Guardiola’s men struggled to break down Arsenal’s well-organised rearguard. That result means they have still not beaten another member of the Premier League’s top five this term.

Writing City off would be a huge mistake. There is still a good chance that they will set a new record by becoming the first team in English football history to win a fourth consecutive league title this season.

Yet City are not firing on all cylinders right now and their two title rivals, Liverpool and Arsenal, can sense it. Guardiola has work to do if his side are to climb back to the summit of the standings.

Manchester City vs Aston Villa betting tips

Manchester City will be looking to get back on track here, but Aston Villa will not roll over at the Etihad Stadium.

Draw/Manchester City half-time/full-time – 10/3 (bet365)

Manchester City can still reach 91 points this season, which would be their fourth-best tally under Guardiola. It would surely be enough to win the title too.

Indeed, City know that nine wins in their remaining nine matches would probably put them out of the reach of Liverpool and Arsenal, both of whom have a trickier set of fixtures on the horizon.

By this time last year, City had hit their stride. On the way to the treble, they beat the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid by three clear goals or more between March and May. The current side are still winning plenty of matches, but not in the same style.

Having said all that, we expect City to find a way past Aston Villa. They may have to dig deep, though, and it would not be at all surprising if Unai Emery’s side went in at the break on level terms.

Villa are awkward opponents and they can make life difficult for City at times on Wednesday. In the end, though, we expect the champions to come through.

Both teams to score – 3/4 (bet365)

Provided five teams qualify for next season’s Champions League as is probable, Aston Villa are in a strong position.

They hold an 11-point lead over sixth-placed Manchester United going into the midweek set of matches. Erik ten Hag’s team have a game in hand, but Villa have a vastly superior goal difference.

Booking a spot in Europe’s premier competition would be a magnificent achievement in Emery’s first full season at the helm. Villa have not graced the tournament since 1983, when they won it.

Villa’s home form was formidable in the first half of the season, but they have actually been better on the road of late.

Villa have taken 11 points from the last 15 points available at opposition grounds, compared to nine at home over the same period. They have also scored in eight of their last nine away games.

⚽ Tip both teams to score at 3/4 with bet365 ⚽

Ollie Watkins to score any time – 3/1 (bet365)

Erling Haaland is struggling right now. He was kept quiet by Arsenal’s backline on Sunday and has now gone five matches without a goal for club and country.

The Norway international is bound to come good – and when he does, it could be with a vengeance.

Haaland is the favourite in the anytime scorer market, but Ollie Watkins looks like the best pick from a betting perspective.

Haaland is the only player in the Premier League who has put the ball in the back of the net more often than Watkins in 2023/24.

The Villa striker is enjoying a fantastic season and he can make an impact on Wednesday’s encounter.

⚽ Back Ollie Watkins to score any time at 3/1 with bet365 ⚽
