Man arrested during Manchester derby on suspicion of tragedy chanting gesture

A man has been arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting during the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, police have confirmed.

It’s alleged the man mocked the Munich Air Disaster of 1958 in which 23 people, including eight Manchester United players were killed, by making an ‘aeroplane’ gesture.

The arrest was made after other people in the crowd for the match between Manchester City and United reported the incident to security.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police read: “During the Manchester derby, officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting.

“Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested by our officers.”

City won the Premier League match 3-1 after coming from behind.
