Kylian Mbappe faces huge decision over Olympics vs Real Madrid debut

Kylian Mbappe faces an anxious wait to see if Real Madrid will grant him permission to represent France at this summer’s Olympics.

The Paris-born star is expected to complete a switch to the La Liga giants this summer after announcing his intention to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract expires in June.

Mbappe has never hidden his desire to represent France at the Paris Olympics with reports claiming it was a deal breaker in negotiations with any future club.

PSG were happy for Mbappe to take a period of leave to play at the Olympics had he opted to remain with the Ligue 1 champions.

However, his impending move to Real Madrid appears to have caused a roadblock in his plans with the club opposed to releasing their stars for this summer’s festivities in the French capital.

That includes Madrid’s current French contingent of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Ferland Mendy.

Teams participating in the men’s Olympic football competition will be required between July 24 and August 9.

That means Mbappe would miss a blockbuster debut against El Clasico rivals Barcelona in a pre-season friendly scheduled for August 3, in the United States.

According to The Athletic, Mbappe still retains hope of appearing at the Olympics despite Madrid’s stance.

The report claims that whilst the situation is not expected to call Mbappe’s move to Madrid into doubt, noise around the subject is beginning to grow.

Thierry Henry was named as France’s men Olympic team boss and hopes to include Mbappe as one of three over-aged players.

Squads are typically made up of stars aged 23 and under with three over-aged players permitted.

Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud of AC Milan are reportedly the other two players Henry is pinning his hopes on.

When asked this week whether it would be a blow if Mbappe was unable to play this summer, Henry said: “Like the France (men’s team) manager (Didier Deschamps) has already said, everyone wants to come.

“As for whether that’s possible, that’s another question and you already know why it’s difficult.

“What we’ll try to do is have the strongest team possible, but we don’t have certainty. We still don’t know where he (Mbappe) is going to go (his next club).”

“We will try to see what we can do, but in the end, and unfortunately, the decision comes down to the club, because the Olympics are not on FIFA dates. You can’t bluff when you’re not holding any cards.”
