‘It’s an outrage’ – Harry Kane’s local pub send public plea to council over abandoned £7,000 statue

Harry Kane’s local pub in Walthamstow has called on the local council to gift them a bronze statue of the England skipper.

The statue was commissioned five years ago, but has remained in storage as Waltham Forest Council in east London have been struggling to find a location for it.

The sculpture was completed in 2020 at a cost of £7,200, but attempts to place it at Chingford’s Overground railway station were denied over fears of vandalism by rival football fans.

A spokesperson for the Bayern Munich striker said he was ‘really excited’ about the statue and hopes a location can be found soon.

That location could be The Bell in Walthamstow, operated by Stonegate Group and We Love Sport, who are using the power of social media to help persuade Waltham Forest Council to bring the statue ‘home’.

They believe that the depiction of their local son would be welcomed by punters who can enjoy a cold pint in the presence of football royalty.

In an Instagram post on Friday, The Bell wrote an open letter that read: “Dear Waltham Forest Council, Something caught our eye today.

“A certain statue lying in storage: forgotten, abandoned, hidden from the eyes of thousands.

“We think it’s an outrage the public has been deprived of such a fitting tribute to England’s greatest ever goal scorer for so long. But, we think we have a solution.

“Picture this: our pub, The Bell in Harry’s hometown of Walthamstow, adorned with the majestic presence of the man himself, immortalised in bronze.

“What could be better? Sipping a cold beer in the presence of footballing royalty.

“Let’s bring Harry home well, to our pub at least. Let us know what you think.

“Perhaps let’s have a chat over a pint to see how we can make this a reality.

“We look forward to hearing from you. Warm regards, We Love Sport.”

Waltham Forest Council are yet to reply to The Bell’s ambitious attempt to make good use of the statue which was paid for from a fund allocated to ‘local initiatives, projects or improvements’ that councillors in each one of the borough’s 22 wards share out.

The Big Issue claims that the pictures of the statue were given to Waltham Forest Council by the Rugby-based company Sculpture Machine.
