Gareth Southgate gives update on John Stones injury blow ahead of Man City vs Arsenal

Gareth Southgate has confirmed that John Stones came off injured as a result of an abductor problem.

There were worrying scenes for Manchester City fans as the defender left England’s friendly against Belgium early on in the 2-2 draw.

The defender pulled up in the eighth minute of the clash at Wembley and was replaced by Joe Gomez.

A moment of indecision saw Stones stumble and land awkwardly after losing the ball, later falling to the ground and receiving treatment.

Speaking after the game, Southgate said: “We’re disappointed if he’s got a problem.

“It’s in the abductor area. He came in on the back of not having played for two weeks so it wasn’t an overload issue.

“But I hate sending players back to their clubs if they are not fully fit.”

The news will worry his club side Man City, who face Arsenal in a titanic Premier League bout on Sunday.

Stones mannerisms weren’t exactly positive either, heading straight down the tunnel, and later emerging in the second half stoney-faced.

City have already seen fellow key defender Kyle Walker pick up an injury in England’s previous match against Brazil.

Walker left the England camp with a suspected hamstring injury against Brazil, but Sky Sports have since claimed that the issue isn’t thought to be ‘too serious’.

That means that he could feature against Arsenal, with City hoping for a similar diagnosis for Stones.

City haven’t had the best international break, though, with Ederson, Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne all avoiding duty with issues.

Further complicating matters, key defender Manuel Akanji also suffered a knock while with Switzerland, and has been left out of the team for their friendly against Ireland.
