Euro 2024: England WAGs risk angering Gareth Southgate after hiring $125,000 security for Euro 2024

England‘s WAGs are set to snub the Football Association by arranging their own private security this summer, splashing out as much as $126,000 during the summer tournament.

The group – led by tournament veterans Fern Maguire and Megan Pickford – intend to share the cost. Their partners, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, have been part of the national team for four major tournaments and they are intending to do things their own way.

Bukayo Saka‘s partner Tolami Benson and Sasha Atwood – girlfriend of Manchester City’s Jack Grealish – are also on board with the plan. The players’ partners want to bring in their own security team after finding the FA’s hired protection to be too strict at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

According to The Sun on Sunday, ex-military specialists will be hired to guard them while they enjoy their trip to Germany, where the tournament will be held from June 14 to July 14.

It comes after the German government shared their concerns about the threat of a terror attack putting fans’ safety at risk, following a recent attack in Moscow, Russia that killed 137 people.

“The FA security team looked after them at the World Cup in Qatar but this time they want to ramp up the security around them,” a source told the newspaper.

“They are looking to hire ex-military trained to deal with all sorts of threats. They’ll operate from a discreet distance so the group don’t draw too much attention. It means they can enjoy more freedom and feel safer at the same time.”

The source added: “They’ve been quoted 65,000 ($82,000) for the first few weeks, which will go north of 100,000 ($126,000) if England go all the way.”

England boss Southgate won’t be happy

England manager Gareth Southgate has always maintained his preference for off-field issues not to be a distraction for his players, and he may not too be pleased with this development.

The 2006 World Cup saw WAGs – including Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Beckham – dominate the headlines in the UK almost on a daily basis, and Southgate will be hoping to avoid a repeat as he looks to end the Three Lions’ 58-year wait for a major international trophy.

England, who reached the final of the Euro 2020 tournament only to lose on penalties against Italy, kick off their group stage campaign against Serbia on June 16.
