England vs Belgium predictions

England and Belgium both registered disappointing results in their first outings of the March international break.

The Three Lions went down 1-0 to Brazil at Wembley Stadium, while Belgium were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland. Needless to say, neither set of players were celebrating at the final whistle.

Gareth Southgate’s side were second best against the Selecao. Losing narrowly to the five-time world champions is hardly a terrible result, but England were favourites to beat a team embarking on its first game under a new manager in Dorival Junior.

England were flat last time out. Had Lewis Dunk not made a mistake late on, the match might have finished 0-0. But that would not have changed the fact that the home team were below par.

Even so, there is no point going overboard. England have often flattered to deceive in the build-up to tournaments under Southgate (so too, incidentally, have Didier Deschamps’ France, who lost 2-0 to Germany last week). Regardless of those defeats, both teams are still among the leading contenders to triumph at Euro 2024.

It is also worth remembering that England were without two of their star men in Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka on Saturday, while Kyle Walker was forced off with an injury.

At the same time, however, the performance against Brazil showed that England still have work to do ahead of the European Championship. They struggled to create chances and lacked a cutting edge. Southgate will hope to see a major improvement in that regard here.

Belgium have won three of the last four head-to-head meetings between these two teams, including twice at the 2018 World Cup.

Will that trend continue, or can England get back on track in their final game before the summer?

England to win – Evens (bet365)

Belgium huffed and puffed against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday, but they could not find a way through.

They might even have lost to Ireland, but Matz Sels kept out Evan Ferguson’s penalty in the 28th minute.

Belgium are a team in transition with several members of their golden generation now out of the picture.

From an England perspective, it will be interesting to see what formation Southgate uses here. There was criticism of his selection of two holding midfielders against Brazil, but that sort of system is not inherently defensive. Still, Connor Gallagher struggled in a role which is not best suited to his attributes.

England should deliver an improved display this time around, while it is worth remembering that Kevin De Bruyne, Belgium’s best player, will not be involved.

What is more, England have not lost back-to-back home friendlies since Roy Hodgson’s tenure in 2013. Go for the hosts in this one.

Both teams to score – 4/5 (BetMGM)

Belgium have not lost a game since the 2022 World Cup, when they were eliminated in the group stage.

Domenico Tedesco’s side topped their Euro 2024 qualifying group ahead of Austria. They found the back of the net in all eight games and scored a total of 22 goals – an average of 2.75 per match.

This will be their biggest test yet since a friendly against Germany this time last year. On that occasion, Belgium scored three times in a 3-2 win.

Despite drawing a blank against Ireland, Belgium will be confident of causing England’s suspect defence a few problems. Indeed, there is still a sense that Southgate is unsure what his best back four is, and Walker and Shaw – the first-choice full-backs – will miss out on Tuesday.

England are unlikely to be shut out for a second game running, though, so goals at both ends looks like a sensible pick here.

Ivan Toney to score any time – 7/4 (bet365)

Kane has been ruled out of Tuesday’s game. The England captain has now returned to Bayern Munich for treatment on an ankle issue.

Ollie Watkins was given the nod up top against Brazil and Southgate praised his performance after the game.

The manager will probably use this opportunity to take a look at Ivan Toney, who is battling with Watkins to be the No.2 striker behind Kane.

Toney will be desperate to make an impression in what looks set to be his first ever start at international level. Up to now, the striker has only been on the pitch in an England shirt for nine minutes.

Brentford are struggling for form in the Premier League but there is no doubting Toney’s quality. He will probably be playing for one of the division’s top teams by the beginning of next season.

As well as posing a threat from open play, Toney’s excellent penalty record means he is likely to be on spot-kick duty here. With Kane absent, he is the obvious choice in this market.

Go for Ivan Toney in the anytime goalscorer market at 7/4 with bet365 ⚽
