Chelsea told to sign Luka Modric on free transfer and consider move for Real Madrid teammate

Joe Cole has urged Chelsea to make a sensational play for Real Madrid stars Luka Modric, and potentially Toni Kroos too.

The ex Blues star believes the introduction of some experienced players could take the club’s talented young squad to the next level, and suggested they consider snapping up the decorated duo.

Cole, who lifted six major trophies with the west Londoners between 2003 and 2010, gave the proposal whilst speaking to talkSPORT at the Soccer Aid 2024 launch.

When asked if he felt Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is the right man to take the club forward, the former England international was quick to voice his support for the under-fire Argentine, before offering his advice to him.

Cole told talkSPORT: “I’d be looking to bring in some experienced players who set the tone.

“I’m thinking is Luka Modric out of [contract]? Does he want to come and play in the Premier League for one more year?”

He then pointed to Modric’s track-record in inspiring his younger teammates, saying: “He’s still doing bits at Real Madrid. And how much has he helped [Eduardo] Camavinga, [Aurelien] Tchouameni, [Federico] Valverde?

“He would’ve had such an influence on them as players.”

The 42-year-old also queried the availability of the Croatian’s midfield partner: “Toni Kroos is 34. Does he want to test himself at his age? Coming over here and helping out this young squad.

“They’re just names I’ve thrown off the top of my head, I don’t know their situation.”

And while Cole’s wish may appear improbable at face value with the ageing pair seemingly nearing the end of their careers, there is a slim chance of either player considering a spectacular switch to England.

With Modric and Kroos out of contract at the Spanish giants at the end of the season and both of them yet to agree new deals, this has fed rumours that their futures could lie away from Madrid.

Despite Spanish media claiming Modric’s most likely next destinations to be the Saudi Pro League or the MLS, perhaps the 38-year-old could be open to a return to the Premier League, having starred for Tottenham between 2008 and 2012.

Even if Chelsea fail to pull off Cole’s improbable transfer suggestion, the three-time league champion with the club remains optimistic about the future of his former employer.

Describing Pochettino as a ‘top manager’ later in the interview, he also observed: “It’s a transitional time for the club, we know that. There’s young, young players.”

Cole went on to laud the potential of the group, and praised the former Spurs’ boss for clearly outlining his plans for the squad, adding: “There’s so much talent there, there’s so much potential.

“I think Poch has done a great job because he’s constantly drilling that narrative. You can’t look at this Chelsea team like you would Chelsea teams of the past.

“This is a team that’s developing, the targets are different.”
