Carlos Vela without a team? Reportedly no agreement with San Jose Earthquakes

Carlos Vela is in a delicate situation since, according to reports, he did not reach an agreement with the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS and remains without a team, with little chance of playing until the summer, since the transfer windows in the rest of the world are closed.

The striker finished his contract with LAFC in December and, although both parties attempted a renewal, it did not come. Then the possibility of this other Californian team arose and, although until yesterday there was talk of an imminent agreement, the talks failed, according to ESPN.

The report confirmed that there were indeed talks between the Mexican player’s agent and the San Jose board, which had shown interest in signing him as a star player, but without specifying what went wrong, the agreement was not reached. “There were meetings and negotiations, but in the end the deal was not closed,” the report states.

According to Michele Giannone of TUDN, San Jose‘s offer to Carlitos was $1.7 million guaranteed to make him the team’s franchise player.

Vela, for his part, had a strong approach from Cruz Azul of Liga MX, but decided to reject it to remain in MLS, as one of the stars of the league. Now, the market in Mexico is closed until the summer, while in the United States, although he has a good reputation, he is already a 35-year-old veteran and his demands could be too high for what some team would like to offer him, such as the Earthquakes, which is a much smaller franchise compared to LAFC.

In addition, Vela has acknowledged that he likes big cities, glamour and major sports leagues, particularly the NBA, something that San Jose could not offer him.

Meanwhile, Carlos Vela is a free agent. In 2023, he played in 39 regular season games, in which he played 2,387 minutes, scored nine goals and provided seven assists in the 2023 season.
