Canelo Alvarez on the verge of huge U-turn that will leave Eddie Hearn devastated

Canelo Alvarez’s next fight is reportedly ‘almost a done deal’.

According to ESPN’s Fernando Barbosa, the undisputed super middleweight champion is on the verge of signing a contract to box Jaime Munguía on May 4.

In a dramatic U-turn that will devastate Eddie Hearn, Alvarez’s next fight will take place on Al Haymon’s PBC platform after they recently inked a broadcast deal with Amazon Prime

“Hearing it is almost a done deal,” Barbosa wrote on X.

“Preliminary Congratulations to PBC, Canelo & Munguia. Great job coming together, that’s what’s all about. I do believe it is a highly commercial fight.

“Mexico Vs. Mexico = WAR Let’s go!”

Canelo inked a lucrative three-fight deal with PBC in 2023, but it was recently reported a split had taken place and the sport’s biggest star was on the verge of rejoining Matchroom Boxing.

Barbosa previously tweeted:  “Everything indicates that it won’t be fights with Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez, or Terence Crawford or even under the PBC banner for Canelo.

“The plan for fights against Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia with Eddie Hearn has instead been activated for the four-time world champion.”

Hearn publicly admitted that he was working behind the scenes to make Canelo’s next fight, but it now appears he was snubbed at the last minute.

Now, it's reported he's decided to stick with Haymon and PBC

Whoever is promoting it, and wherever it is broadcast, boxing fans are excited about Canelo facing off against a fellow Mexican, who boasts a perfect 43-0 record.

Munguía recently made a statement of intent by beating John Ryder.

The 27-year-old battered the British fighter before stopping him in round nine when they clashed earlier this year, unlike Canelo, who was forced to go the distance with Ryder.

Despite dealing with a broken nose for most of the fight, Ryder won a couple of rounds and heard the final bell in his unanimous decision defeat against Canelo last May.

Munguía boasts several other high-profile wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Gabriel Rosado, Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, and Liam Smith.

It’s now just a matter of waiting for his fight with Canelo to be made official.
