Bayern Munich ‘open discussions with Xabi Alonso’ in potential blow to Liverpool

Bayern Munich have reportedly opened talks with Xabi Alonso regarding their head coach position.

The German giants are looking for a boss to take charge at the end of the season following the decision to part company with Thomas Tuchel, who remains in charge until the end of the campaign.

According to Sky Sports, Alonso’s camp have suggested that he would be interested in the position, despite Liverpool’s interest.

In order for a move to go through, Bayern or Liverpool would need to pay Bayer Leverkusen a release fee of £12.8million as compensation.

Alonso has attracted huge plaudits due to the incredible job being done with Leverkusen.

As it stands, Leverkusen hold a ten-point advantage over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race with just ten league games remaining.

Liverpool have also been heavily linked with Alonso as they look to replace Jurgen Klopp this summer.

The German boss announced his plans to leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign with the former Reds’ midfielder the clear favourite to take the role.

However it seems that Liverpool will have a battle on their hands if they are to get their man.

Alonso was asked about the interest of the two clubs two weeks ago, but delivered a coy response.

“Bayern, Liverpool? I have nothing new to say,” said Alonso.

“Right now, I’m Bayer Leverkusen coach, and that’s certain. Regarding the future, I have nothing new to say.

Liverpool legend Didi Hamann outlines why Xabi Alonso is the perfect choice to replace Jurgen Klopp at the Reds!

“Have I received a call from Bayern? That’s only hypothetical. Again, I have nothing new to say.”
