Aston Villa star Leon Bailey explains why he’d consider trading potential Champions League football for mid-table Chelsea

Despite being fourth in the Premier League, Leon Bailey has admitted he could be tempted to move to a ‘bigger’ team.

The Jamaican winger only signed a new contract with Aston Villa in February, having been rewarded for a fine season in the Midlands.

Bailey has ten goals and ten assists in all competitions and is only five goal contributions off his career best season with Bayer Leverkusen in 2020/21.

Key in Villa’s push to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football, Unai Emery will be desperate to hang on to the 26-year-old, but it might not be that easy.

Speaking to the ‘Let’s Be Honest’ podcast, Bailey discussed how important it is to keep improving and giving exposure to Jamaica and Jamaican football.

Asked if he could see himself joining countryman Dujuan Richards at Chelsea, Bailey explained why a jump to a team eight positions and 17 points below Villa in the table could be tempting.

“You have big teams in England, they call themselves the big six. The Arsenals and the Chelseas,” he said.

“It has always been my dream to play in the Premier League and I am right now.

“Who wouldn’t want to go to a massive team? Especially coming out of Jamaica, do you know how big that is for the country? Especially being who I am as well.

“It would shine more light and that has been my focus whenever overseas. It is to use my platform to be able to shine light on the country and the young talents. It’s difficult for us Jamaicans to even dream about making it to Europe.

“I don’t know how to answer that question but I’d just have to see in the moment.”

He added: “I’ve really been enjoying my football and I’m really focused on Aston Villa, having one of the best seasons of my career.
