Arsenal vs Brentford predictions

Just over two months ago, Arsenal had their Premier League title chances widely dismissed following back-to-back defeats by West Ham United and Fulham.

Those two London derbies played out very differently. The Gunners ought to have beaten West Ham on the balance of play. A few days later they were second best against Fulham.

It was not just those two losses that led people to doubt Mikel Arteta’s men. In truth, they delivered few impressive performances before the turn of the year.

Compared to the first half of last term, in which Arsenal routinely blew opponents away, the north Londoners looked mediocre.

They struggled in attack in particular. Despite widespread calls for Arsenal to sign a new centre-forward in January (Brentford’s Ivan Toney was a top target), this was a problem of creation as well as conversion.

Put simply, Arsenal did not fashion enough quality opportunities in their 20 Premier League matches in 2023. After the aforementioned loss to Fulham on New Year’s Eve, they ranked a lowly seventh for goals scored.

What a difference a few weeks can make. After smashing a cumulative 31 goals past their last seven opponents (that is an astonishing 4.43 per game), Arsenal are now the division’s top scorers ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Gunners’ goal difference of +50 is also superior to those of their two title rivals. Given how tight things are at the summit of the standings, that particular measure could be a tie-breaker at the end of the season.

With Liverpool and City set to face off at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, Arsenal have the chance to steal a march on both clubs by beating Brentford a day earlier.

They should get the job done in front of their own supporters, but the relegation-battling Bees will not be short of motivation of their own.

Arsenal vs Brentford betting tips

Two clubs from the capital will lock horns in a London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Arsenal -2 Asian handicap – 21/20 (bet365)

Brentford drew at the Emirates last season, throwing a spanner in the works of Arsenal’s title tilt in the process. However, they will struggle to replicate that feat this time around.

Thomas Frank’s side drew 2-2 with Chelsea last weekend, but they have still lost 10 of their last 13 games. Only Burnley have amassed fewer points in that period.

As a result of the downturn, Brentford are looking over their shoulder. A six-point gap to Luton Town in 18th place means they do have a little breathing space, but the Hatters have a game in hand on the Bees and have a more winnable match against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Arsenal have turned on the style almost every week in 2024. They have thumped Palace 4-0, West Ham 6-0, Burnley 6-0, Newcastle United 4-1 and Sheffield United 6-0.

Another comprehensive victory should follow against Brentford in Saturday’s late game.

Arsenal/Arsenal half-time/full-time – 8/11 (bet365)

A significant amount of confidence will be flowing through the veins of the Arsenal players right now.

No one at the Emirates is under any illusions as to how difficult it will be to finish above both Liverpool and Manchester City. The bookmakers have Arsenal down as third-favourites to lift the Premier League trophy in May.

But the sense one gets looking in from the outside is that Arsenal truly believe they can do this.

We should see that manifest itself in a fast start on Saturday. In their last four games, the Gunners have scored a remarkable 13 goals in the first half.

That is more than 11 top-flight teams have managed in both halves of football in the whole of 2024. Crystal Palace, Everton, Burnley and Sheffield United have not even scored that many first-half goals all season.

Only Liverpool have a better points-per-game record on familiar turf than Arsenal, who have lost just once at home in the league all season.

If, as is probable, Brentford find themselves behind at the interval, it is hard to see the visitors staging a second-half fightback.

Kai Havertz to score any time – 6/4 (bet365)

Gabriel Jesus featured as a substitute against Sheffield United on Monday night, but that does not necessarily mean he will be back in the starting XI for this one.

“We didn’t want to take any risks,” Arteta said of Jesus recently. “We need him fit and now we want to make sure we load him in the right way.”

With that in mind, do not be surprised if Kai Havertz starts up front again on Saturday. Even if Jesus is given the nod, the Germany international could be selected in an attacking midfield role.

Havertz continues to divide opinion, even among the Arsenal fan base, but he has scored in each of Arsenal’s last three fixtures.

Arteta will be loath to take him out of the team given that type of form, while a Brentford side that has shipped an average of two goals per game this calendar year may not offer the sternest resistance.

⚽ Tip Kai Havertz to score any time at 6/4 with bet365 ⚽
